How Can You Tell if You Have a Cavity Between Your Teeth?

Spots of decay can develop anywhere on your teeth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces. You might even end up with an interproximal cavity (a cavity between your teeth). Unfortunately, interproximal cavities can be a sneaky problem because they are often impossible to see. Plus, they may not cause any symptoms until they are fairly advanced. How can you tell if you have a cavity between your teeth? This blog post provides useful information to help you enjoy a healthy smile.

How Do Cavities Between Teeth Develop?

Interproximal cavities develop in the same manner as other cavities. When you consume sugary or starchy foods, bacteria in your mouth interact with food particles to form plaque. If plaque remains on your teeth for too long, it can harden into tartar and eventually weaken your tooth enamel to the point where a cavity appears.

Some people are at a greater risk of interproximal cavities than others. For example, you might be more prone to this issue if your teeth are crooked or crowded. Your orthodontic issues could make it difficult for you to thoroughly clean between your teeth.

Signs that You Have a Cavity Between Your Teeth

While a cavity is in its early stages, it might not cause any noticeable symptoms. The only way to diagnose it is with the help of your dentist. They can use their X-ray machine to get a comprehensive view of your teeth; they can even identify small spots of decay in places that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye.

After a cavity has progressed, you may notice a few signs that it is there, including:

  • Increased sensitivity when you consume hot, cold, or spicy items.
  • An intermittent toothache.
  • Your floss always seems to snag in the same spot.

If you suspect that you have a cavity, visit your dentist as soon as you can. In most cases, a simple filling is all that is necessary to stop the decay from becoming severe.

How to Prevent Cavities Between Your Teeth

Here are a few steps you can take to reduce your risk of interproximal cavities:

  • Floss daily. Try to floss each night before you brush your teeth. If you find it challenging to use regular floss, you could try a water flosser instead.
  • See if you are a candidate for braces or Invisalign. If your teeth are crooked, straightening them can make it easier to clean your interproximal spaces.
  • Drink lots of water. Water can rinse away food particles that would otherwise stay between your teeth.
  • Eat a balanced diet. Try to eat sugary foods sparingly. Instead, center your diet on things like vegetables, lean meats, dairy, and whole grains.

Interproximal cavities can afflict anyone. Use the advice in this article to protect your precious oral health.
