Soak Up the Sun for a Healthier Smile!

The sun gets a bad rap sometimes. You may frequently hear about how spending too much time outdoors can lead to burns, premature signs of aging, and even skin cancer. Such warnings are valid. However, there is another side to the story.  Moderate exposure to sunlight can actually benefit your overall wellness. Soaking up the sun could even lead to a healthier smile! How is that the case? This blog post explains.

The Amazing Power of Vitamin D

When UVB rays contact your skin, they instigate a reaction with a specific protein in your body. That protein is then converted into vitamin D3, a nutrient that plays a vital role in oral health. Here are a few noteworthy benefits of vitamin D:

  • It promotes calcium absorption. Calcium is essential for building and maintaining strong teeth and bones. The human body cannot utilize it properly unless adequate amounts of vitamin D are present.
  • It may protect against tooth decay. Research indicates that people with enough vitamin D in their body may have a 50% lower risk of developing tooth decay than people with a vitamin D deficiency.
  • It can support your immune system. Vitamin D can lower inflammation throughout the body and reduce the risk of infections. Therefore, it may reduce your risk of gum disease.

How Much Sunlight Do You Need?

It is estimated that around 1 in 4 U.S. adults have a vitamin D deficiency. If you suspect that you are in that group, there are some simple steps you can take to get more of this vital nutrient.

One easy thing you can do is spend a bit more time outside. The exact amount of sun exposure that you need depends on where you live, the color of your skin, and the clothes you are wearing. In summer, most people can get enough vitamin D by spending less than 30 minutes outside in the middle of the day. If you have fair skin, you may need less than 10 minutes of sun exposure.

It is important to note that sunscreen can interfere with vitamin D production. Try spending a bit of time outside without any SPF on your skin. After that, be sure to use proper protection so you do not get burned.

Other Ways to Get Vitamin D

Due to the weather in your local area or other factors, it might be difficult or even impossible for you to get enough vitamin D through sun exposure. Fortunately, you can also get this vital nutrient through your diet. Try eating more dairy products, fatty fish, and eggs. You could also take a vitamin D3 supplement.

Are you getting enough sunlight? Spending just a few minutes outdoors each day has the potential to significantly benefit your oral health!
